Chocolate

Chocolate causes certain endocrine glands to secrete hormones that affect your feelings and behaviour by making you happy. Therefore, it counteracts depression, in turn reducing the stress of depression. Your stress-free life helps you maintain a youthful disposition, both physically and mentally. So, eat lots of chocolate! Elaine Sherman, book of Divine Indulgences.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF CHOCOLATE
The latest scientific research has proven that Chocolate, which is high in cocoa solids,(70% or more) is now recognised as having many qualities that are beneficial to one’s health.
  • Chocolate contains essential trace elements and nutrients such as iron, calcium and potassium, and vitamins A. B1, C, D, and E.
  • Cocoa is also the highest natural source for Magnesium. Magnesium deficiency is linked with hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, joint problems and pre-menstrual tension (PMT or PMS).
    More benefits of magnesium:
    • Beneficial for the Cardiovascular System and hypertension.
    • Adding magnesium to one’s diet has been proven to increase pre-menstrual progesterone levels, thus alleviating the problem of pre-menstrual drop in progesterone levels which is responsible for the violent mood swings familiar to so many women. ….. and what better way to add magnesium than through delicious Belgian Chocolate Products from Allen’s Gourmet Candies
  •  There are benefits in Chocolate for both men and women:  The fat in high quality plain chocolate (although technically a 'saturated fat') can be considered cholesterol free as it neither clogs up the arteries or contributes to high cholesterol levels.
WHAT IS THE HEALTHIEST CHOCOLATE?
Plain chocolate products containing a minimum 70% or more cocoa solids are the healthiest and the best way to satisfy a craving for chocolate. If you’re a Milk or White Chocolate lover, choose products with a minimum of 30% chocolate solids (Milk Chocolate) or Chocolate Butter – White Chocolate.
Many brands of chocolates, both the commercial variety and many hand made chocolates varieties, are some of the worst culprits with centres consisting almost exclusively of flavoured Fondant and Praline. Fondant is virtually 100% sugar and pralines can be just as bad.

Maltitol is a member of a family of bulk sweeteners known as polyols or sugar alcohols. It is about 90% as sweet as sugar, non cariogenic (resistant to metabolism by oral bacteria which break down sugars and starches to release acids that may lead to cavities or erode tooth enamel) and significantly reduced in calories.

Facts about Maltitol

  • While maltitol is found naturally in a variety of fruits, most maltitol is commercially made. Maltose, a sugar component of corn, is extracted and converted to produce maltitol.
  • Maltitol is a natural ingredient and contains no additives or artificial ingredients
  • Maltitol is a carbohydrate that is sometimes referred to as a sugar alcohol or polyol.

The Benefits of Maltitol

  • It tastes like sugar and is 90% as sweet as sugar.
  • It has about half the calories of sugar (2.1 calories per gram; sugar:4.0 calories per gram)
